Too often, retirement is portrayed as a financial event or a journey; one in which you spend years paying into Social Security, save into your retirement plan or pension and, as a result, live happily ever after. However, that’s only a small part of the equation. No matter if you’re just beginning your career or in the process of winding it down, each and every retirement plan needs to consider factors such as your relationships, overcoming difficult times and circumstances, opportunities to continue to grow and learn, as well as reflect and appreciate.
Here are five life changing videos that can help you see beyond the dollars and cents of retirement. They include and capture the essence of planning for you… your body, mind, and spirit.
Crash And Learn
Retirement’s only guarantee is that at some point during that time you will die. It’s a conversation most people want to avoid, but it’s one that is all too real. Many people enter retirement with the idea that they have 20-30 years to do whatever they want, but it can all change in an instant. Therefore, it’s important to keep an eye on your pride, to mend relationships now instead of later, and most importantly, be a light in the lives of others, particularly your family. Make it a time to create a no-regrets retirement plan.
Saving for retirement can sometimes feel like a bully who teases, taunts, and even punches you. Scathing report after report suggests you’re not saving enough and can even make you feel like you’ll never be able to retire. At some point, you’ll break out of that clinch and be in a position to flex your muscle. It may not be in a timeframe that you see coming just yet … and may even end up being unconventional, but know that the goliath that can be retirement can be slain.
Everything Has A Cost
Retirement is one of the most powerful and well known icons of freedom. However, it comes at a cost to those individuals and families who pay to keep it that way. The American dream, including retirement, is a time honored tradition and blessing that some people never get to experience. Therefore, it shouldn’t be used as a selfish time to do only as you want and please. Make the most of the sacrifice others, and maybe you have made by being more, doing more, and serving others.
People Are Awesome
People are awesome, and that includes you! Retirement is in the process of being redefined, not as an end but as a new beginning. The legacy of a person’s life will be defined by the situations, circumstances, and fears they took on and overcame, not based on what they didn’t do. Now that doesn’t mean you have to perform death-defying stunts, or push your life to extremes. Yet, it’s important not to let your life get boring and stale. Continually seek out your purpose in life by not only employing the skills and talents you developed throughout your working career, but also through new experiences and personal tests.
Be An Example
Surround yourself with the right people. The news may be filled with negative headlines, and life itself can come with plenty of disappointments. We all get knocked down at some point, even during retirement. But you can’t focus on how many times you wind up on the canvas; you have to focus on bouncing back up, and helping others do the same. Stop associating with people who want to take the joy out of life. Surround yourself with people who have your best interests at heart, who would risk their life to make someone’s better, and more importantly, find the time and energy to be that person, too.
It’s Late In The Game, But…
It may feel like time is winding down and the end of a season is near, but it’s never too late for dreams to come true.
The Hospital Window
Retirement is a blank slate. It’s completely within your power you to paint the picture you want.
